Funding Farm Diversification Projects
Helping farmers turn strong ideas into income-generating projects.
Diversification is becoming an important part of modern farming. For some businesses it is about resilience. For others it is about making better use of buildings, land or location. It may be a way to create a more stable income stream, involve the next generation, or reduce reliance on traditional commodity markets.
Ideas can be strong, but funding can be difficult. Traditional lenders often want historic trading results, proven income and a familiar business model. Diversification projects do not always provide that. A glamping site, holiday let, farm shop, equestrian facility or commercial storage project may be well thought through, but it may not have an established income history before the work begins.
Alchemy Farming Finance takes a broader view. We look at the existing farm, the assets available, the project plan, the location, the likely demand and the farmer’s wider objectives. The aim is to understand whether a practical funding solution can help move the project forward.
Projects we may support:
- Holiday lets
- Glamping sites
- Barn conversions
- Farm shops
- Cafés and visitor attractions
- Equestrian facilities
- Storage units
- Commercial workshops
- Renewable energy projects
Why diversification funding can be difficult:
- No trading history for the new activity
- Income based on forecasts
- Planning or build stages creating uncertainty
- Traditional lenders unfamiliar with mixed agricultural projects
- Project timescales not matching slow application processes
Our practical approach:
- Assess the existing farm and assets
- Review the purpose and viability of the project
- Consider the timeline
- Look at how the funding will support long-term resilience
- Keep the process clear and commercially realistic
Farm Diversification Project, Aberdeenshire
An Aberdeenshire family farm wanted to convert underused buildings into holiday accommodation but found traditional lenders cautious because the project had no trading history. By taking a wider view of the existing farm, assets and project plan, Alchemy Farming Finance funded £169,000 to help the works begin. The result was a new income stream and stronger long-term resilience.
